So no enemies use earth in PVE huh... Funny, what are those stones being thrown at my runner down near Glade and Henge? I could have sworn that was STONING... Maybe thats a water spell.... And those arcanists in the desert, are they tossing marshmellows at me... cause it says stoning too...Oh I know, they are smoking pot...hence the stoning thing...I got it now.. You are right, no need for earth armor.
On topic, fire still rules over earth for effectiveness, AOE or otherwise.

each element has a use.. fire is very good in the early stages of the game through to lions arch.. you can still run fire all the way but it becomes less effective. air is good as well from kryta onwards less nuking capabilities but tremendous spiking potential and much better for takin on titans than fire. earth is for those situations where you know you arent going to face mesmers. then you just throw up your wards buff your armour and laugh at that puny warrior trying to do you damage lol
elementalists are very versatile

why start ele again?
but if u do want to start a new ele so badly try smth new - pure fire build's not the most interesting thing to run... i switched to water mid-lvl then played earth then air, did HUGE number of carpet-bombing fow runs with fire build and got so bored now i'm playing anythining but fire... and last couple of month i'm using my ele as a mule char
btw i dont think that fire line does the max damage - earth/water can do alot and any n/mes can do more than average fire ele after all skillnerfs

No doubt fire wont do the max. You ever use some of those air spells with glyph of power.. Holy hell thats a lot of damage. Not to mention air and water can be used together, on a limited basis of course. Im still confused on the stoning issue though... do the arcanists puff puff give... or puff give puff....

Plain and Simple
I'm going to say what we have all almost been saying this entire time (gasp!):
Fire is best for PvE
Earth is best for PvP
As for air and water...even i'm not brave enough to talk about that

Heh Air and Earth Rules in PvP. Thought in PvE, Earth is a viable option as Water or Air is... I don't like fire for its crappy DoT damages and AoE damage... Seems not efficient enough... Air can spike with Surge+Orb, Earth ignores armor, Water get people real slow and Fire...? Burning? Not really, with the duration of burning...AoE? Any PvP player can run away from a Meteor Shower and with the NPC nerfs, monsters now run away when you cast an AoE spell on them...
I'd say Earth is the most versatile for PvE~PvP

I wouldn't say that all of the elements have good effects except fire. Burning sucks compared to ignoring armor, or spiking, but the other elements do these things to even them out with fire. Otherwise, fire would probably be better than any other element.

I think armor is merely cosmetic. However, if you are rich and have endless storage space or whatever you could have 4 of the idfferent sets of armor. That would be expensive but would help due to the weak armor ele players are given.
Though I do not think earth eles really have to worry about armor anyway due to their skills in defense, it would be a bonus but I would consider this a minor thought.

earth >>> fire. obs flame/crystal wave - armor ignoring damage -> best ele damage spells. armor spells - make you one tough cookie. wards - help party members survive. earth + air = works wonderfully (enervating/stoning; shock/aftershock; iron mist/air spike). fire - lotsa fireworks, 0 efficiency. conclusion: earth >>> fire.

Now I wouldn't jumpt to saying fire is nothing but fireworks. I think any type of elementalist can be good depending on how you use it. Fire is just considered weak because of the amount of new players who use it due to the amount handed to you in pre-searing. However, putting fire in the hands of an expert and putting earth into the hands of an expert.....well the outcome would have to determine the players skill not just the skills they have.

not like fire is going to do anything vs the 150 or so armor you get with kinetic- which is ridiculously easy to maintain- in that particular situation u are talking about. of course that is if u dont have obs flesh on... but u are rite, i am mostly a pvp player (got over pve after my 3rd char) and i was talking more in terms of pvp where earth/air dominate the damage line, the rest of the eles running water hexes, and a few dumping some aoe damage with fire in large games. but, as of this moment, fire is largely a pve thing. i expect that to change somewhat with alliance battles and the high chance of people ganging up together... but nothing a ward vs ele cant solve

my first character was an ele and i switched to air as soon as i got enough skills. then once i ascended i worked on getting equipment/skills/headgear to go all 4 elements.
if in in a guild team i choose what i think wil be most effective, and if its a PUG i ask what they wan't (starting to get annoyed with the response "element?!")
my personal fav are water for UW, Air for FoW, Earth for Tombs, i find running fire is a waste of time in high level areas as your only ever in a group for using MS to interrupt, why not take a mesmer or ranger, or even a shivers necro
